Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist

Creator of Essence-Based Therapy™

Author of You Are Not Broken

Helping People Remember Who They Were Before the World Told Them Who to Be

Healing isn't about becoming someone new.

It's about remembering who you've always been.

That belief sits at the heart of Linda McInnes' work as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, author, and creator of Essence-Based Therapy™—an integrative, trauma-informed approach that helps people reconnect with the unconditioned, authentic self that exists beneath trauma, grief, fear, and the roles they've learned to play.

For years, Linda has worked alongside individuals navigating anxiety, trauma, complicated grief, relationship challenges, addiction recovery, major life transitions, depression, and family caregiving. Her work blends clinical expertise with deep compassion, helping clients move beyond symptom management toward a lasting sense of wholeness.

Today, she serves clients throughout California through her private practice while developing a broader body of work that bridges psychology, nervous system science, spirituality, and human transformation.

The Story Behind the Work

Like many therapists, Linda's greatest teacher wasn't found in graduate school.

It was found in profound personal loss.

The death of her son, Brad, forever changed the way she understood grief, healing, identity, and what it truly means to recover after life breaks your heart.

As she searched for answers, Linda discovered that traditional conversations about healing often focused on fixing what was broken or reinventing oneself after trauma. Yet that language never felt true to her own experience.

Instead, another truth slowly emerged.

What if we aren't broken?

What if the deepest part of us has remained whole all along?

That question became the foundation of everything that followed.

While reflecting on the enduring presence of her son's essence, Linda began writing what would eventually become You Are Not Broken. The book marked the beginning of a new therapeutic framework—one rooted not in reinvention, but in remembrance.

The Birth of Essence-Based Therapy™

Essence-Based Therapy™ grew from years of clinical practice, personal healing, and careful observation of how people change.

Rather than viewing trauma as something that permanently damages identity, Linda's approach recognizes that every person possesses an intact core self—their essence—that can become obscured by painful experiences, survival strategies, cultural expectations, and protective adaptations.

Healing, therefore, is not the construction of a new identity.

It is the liberation of the one that has always been there.

Drawing from attachment theory, nervous system regulation, somatic awareness, mindfulness, symbolic meaning-making, intuitive wisdom, and trauma-informed clinical practice, Essence-Based Therapy™ helps clients:

  • reconnect with their authentic self

  • regulate the nervous system

  • transform wounds into opportunities for deeper awareness

  • distinguish pain from suffering

  • release limiting beliefs and protective patterns

  • strengthen intuition and inner wisdom

  • cultivate healthier relationships

  • rediscover meaning after grief, trauma, or transition

At its core, Essence-Based Therapy™ offers a simple but powerful premise:

You are not broken. You have simply become disconnected from your essence.
